The Yorkshire and Humber Assembly
Low Carbon Transport Study
JMP Consultants and the Stockholm Environment Institute, on behalf of the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly, have undertaken a study into what measures would be needed to achieve reductions in CO2 emissions from transport. The study has concentrated on what could be practically delivered through transport interventions by organisations within the Yorkshire and Humber Region.
The research has looked at various transport interventions such as car sharing, public transport improvements and new rail/tram services, smartcard ticketing, car-free zones, home working, travel awareness and education, road user charging, etc. Factors that can only be achieved through national or international interventions, such as improved engine efficiency, were factored in as underlying trends. Underlying socio-economic trends, which can impact on mobility, were also factored into the analysis. Two possible future scenarios were tested which would require a scale of delivery and level of use of resources across the region that would be unprecedented.
It is clear from the study that significantly more stringent measures than are currently being applied will be needed to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions from transport.
