Skills

Education, skills and employment are key factors in raising long-term economic performance and improving standards of living. If we are to grow the Yorkshire and Humber economy, the region needs to invest in the education and skills development of the region’s people, and the skills needs of the region’s businesses must be met. We also need to create sustainable employment opportunities, and ensure that all individuals are encouraged to reach their full potential.

The Yorkshire and Humber region has seen marked improvements in education and skills in recent years. For example, in 2006 Yorkshire and Humber achieved the highest rate of ‘A’ Level (and equivalent) results for 16-18 year olds, out of the English regions. However, there are still issues that the region needs to address. Yorkshire and Humber has the lowest rate for GCSE results in England, and businesses still highlight skills gaps in the workforce as affecting their productivity.

Education and skills is not one of the Assembly’s core business areas. However, the Assembly is engaged with the Regional and Skills Partnership, and works in partnership with Yorkshire Forward and the Learning and Skills Council on the development of skills related strategies. We are committed to working in partnership with other agencies and organisations across the region to ensure that Yorkshire and Humber has exceptional education and training, and a healthy labour market without skills gaps or labour shortages.
