Regional Planning

One of the main roles of the Assembly is to act as the ‘regional planning body’. This means it has a responsibility for proposing regional land use planning and transport policies to Government. We receive funding from Government to perform this role.

We work with regional partners and stakeholders to:

  • Prepare the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for Yorkshire and Humber (formerly regional planning guidance or RPG) and within that framework, the Regional Transport Strategy (RTS);
  • Monitor and review the RSS to ensure that delivery of the strategy is secure;
  • Commission and participate in planning and transport studies;
  • Provide local authorities (and the Secretary of State) with an opinion as to the ‘general conformity’ of local Development Plan Documents with the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS).
  • Comment on applications of regional significance, which are likely to affect the implementation of RSS.
