Gypsies and Travellers

Gypsies and Travellers are one of the most socially excluded, deprived and isolated ethnic minority communities in the UK. The Regional Housing Board and the Regional Planning Board have a responsibility to ensure that there is adequate and appropriate provision for Gypsies and Travellers in Yorkshire and Humber.

The Regional Housing Board responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that the Regional Housing Strategy sets out the level and nature of Gypsies’ and Travellers’ accommodation needs and identifies regional priorities for addressing identified needs.
  • Ensuring that Regional Housing Board investment priorities take account of Gypsies' and Travellers' needs.
  • Making recommendations to ministers on the allocation of Gypsies' and Travellers' Site Grant programme resources.
  • Encouraging a strategic approach to addressing Gypsies' and Travellers' needs which involves a range of partners,
  • Providing political leadership for this agenda.

Recent research commissioned by the Regional Housing Board gives a better picture of current and future accommodation needs for Gypsies and Travellers across the region. This research was designed to provide more clarity in the Regional Spatial Strategy as well as directing Regional Housing Board investment into those areas with the clearest strategic need. You can download a copy of this research below.

The first meeting of the Regional Housing Board at the Assembly called for the establishment of a Regional Action Planning Group to take work forward at a regional level. For information about this, contact the Assembly.
