Immingham transport plans backed
Regional transport chiefs have backed plans for a highway scheme providing access to one of the region’s key ports.
The plans, put forward by North East Lincolnshire Council and agreed at the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly’s Regional Transport Board Meeting in Sheffield last Friday (15 June), propose a new link road connecting the A18 to the A180 and giving access to the port of Immingham from the south.
Chris Glen, Chair of the Regional Transport Board said: “We believe this scheme will give a major boost to transport and business in the area.”
“Immingham port plays a key role in the region’s economy, with improved links to the South Humber ports being one of the Regional Spatial Strategy’s top transport priorities. By improving access, this scheme will help to facilitate the growth of the port and the surrounding area.”
“The residents of Immingham will also benefit from this scheme with better access to the A180 and a decrease in traffic through the area.”
Access to the port from the south has been a long standing problem with HGVs travelling through residential areas of Immingham. Parts of Immingham such as Pelham Road, which currently bears the brunt of the through traffic heading in and out of the port, could expect a decrease in traffic of around 76% with a significant improvement in air quality. Traffic in the village of Stallingborough is expected to reduce by 29%.
The scheme, which will be developed with £7million of funding from the Regional Funding Allocation for transport in the region, offers better connections from the Stallingborough Interchange to the south.
North East Lincolnshire Council will now submit a full business case to the Department for Transport so that Ministers can take a final decision on the scheme.
